Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root t-l-l, which carries the sense of heaping or piling up. The same root gives Hebrew tel, the word used for an archaeological mound formed by layers of ancient settlement. English borrowed this sense directly as 'tell,' the term archaeologists use for such mounds, as in Tell Abyad or Tell Halaf.
