Etymology
طَلْي is the verbal noun of the Arabic verb طَلَى (yaṭlī), which means to smear, coat, or anoint a surface with something, such as paint, tar, or ointment. The root ط-ل-ي is a native Semitic root and has no connection to Indo-European vocabulary. It is one of two common masdar forms of the verb, alongside طِلاء, which more often names the substance applied (the paint or coating itself).
