Etymology

The word derives from the Semitic root ḥ-l-l, whose core sense is to untie, loosen, or dissolve. From untying a knot came the sense of solving a problem, giving the singular ḥall, solution. Ḥulūl is its broken plural. The same root also yields the sense of alighting or settling in a place, which underlies the theological meaning of indwelling.
