Etymology

حَلّ is the verbal noun of the verb ḥalla, 'to untie or loosen.' A problem was pictured as a knot, so finding its answer was an act of untying. From the same root come ḥalāl, 'the permitted,' and maḥall, 'a place,' both tied to the idea of loosening or setting down. The root ح-ل-ل is old and shared across the Semitic languages.
