Etymology
مَزَح comes from the triliteral Semitic root م-ز-ح (m-z-ḥ), which carries the sense of jest and light talk. The same root yields the noun مِزاح, meaning joking, and the participle مازِح, meaning one who jokes. It has no connection to Indo-European words for play.
