Etymology

The word is the active participle of the form V verb تَعَلَّقَ (taʿallaqa), "to be attached to, to cling to." That verb derives from the triliteral root ع-ل-ق (ʿ-l-q), whose base sense is hanging, clinging, or sticking. The same root gives علاقة (ʿalāqa), "relationship," and عَلِقَ (ʿaliqa), "to hang, to stick." The shift from physical hanging to abstract relation is direct: what hangs on something is bound to it.
