Etymology
مُحيط is the active participle of the Form IV verb أحاط, 'to surround or encompass.' Both come from the triliteral root ح-و-ط, which carries the idea of enclosing, guarding, and fencing something in. The same root gives حائط, 'wall,' and حِيطة, 'caution.' As a noun the word also names the ocean, the water that rings the land.
