Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root w-j-b (و-ج-ب), which carries the idea of necessity and obligation. The base verb وَجَبَ meant to fall due or to become binding. The Form V pattern تَفَعَّل turns this into a process: a duty coming to rest on someone. In modern usage it appears most often impersonally, تَوَجَّبَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ, meaning it became necessary for him to.
