The word is the active participle of the Form VIII verb اِرْتَبَطَ (irtabaṭa), "to be connected," built on the Semitic root ر-ب-ط (r-b-ṭ), "to tie or bind." The base verb رَبَطَ means to fasten or tether, as with a rope. The participle carries the sense of a thing that has become bound to something else.
