Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral root ع-ج-ز, which means to be weak or unable. The Form IV verb أَعْجَزَ means to render someone powerless or to defeat their efforts. A مُعْجِزَة is literally that which leaves people incapable, since no one can match or explain it. In Islamic theology the term names the sign a prophet performs as proof of his mission.
