Etymology
The word entered Arabic in the twentieth century as a direct borrowing of the German "Nazi," itself a shortened colloquial form of "Nationalsozialist" (National Socialist). Arabic writers adopted it during and after World War II, when news coverage of Germany's ruling party spread the term across the region. Arabic then shaped the loan to fit its own grammar by treating the final "-i" as a nisba ending, the standard Arabic suffix that turns a name into a person or adjective of that group, much like "Iraq" becomes "Iraqi." No older Semitic or Indo-European root underlies it; the word is a twentieth-century political import, not an inherited term.
