Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root r-w-ḥ, whose core sense is wind, breath, and spirit. In Classical Arabic the verb first meant to set out in the evening, when the cool breeze (rīḥ) rises, as opposed to setting out at dawn. Over time that specific sense of evening travel widened into the general meaning to go or to leave. The same root gives Arabic its words for soul (rūḥ) and rest or ease (rāḥa).
