Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ن-ز-ف (n-z-f), which carries the sense of draining or drawing off a liquid until it runs low. Applied to the body, it names the loss of blood. The same root gives the medical noun for hemorrhage and a Form X verb meaning to deplete a resource.
