Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root n-h-ḍ, which carries the sense of rising and lifting. The same root gives the noun nahḍa, the word used for the Arab cultural revival of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The physical meaning of standing up broadened over time into the figurative sense of a people or nation rising.
