هال comes from the triliteral Arabic root ه و ل, which centers on terror and dread. This is a hollow verb: the middle radical و merges with the preceding vowel to produce the long ā sound of hāla. The same root gives Arabic its everyday word for terror, هول, and the adjective هائل for anything vast or dreadful.
