Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root w-s-ṭ, which carries the sense of middle or center. The same root survives in Ethiopic Semitic, where Geʿez wǝsṭ means inside or midst. In Arabic the root branched into a wide family covering mediation, averages, and the name of the Mediterranean Sea.
