Etymology

Waشm comes from the Arabic root w-sh-m, which covers marking or tracing a design into skin. Classical Arabic dictionaries already record the word for the practice of pricking skin and rubbing in dye or soot to leave a permanent mark. The word is native Semitic vocabulary, not a borrowing from another language family.
