Etymology
Άκρως comes from the ancient Greek adjective άκρος, meaning topmost or outermost. Greek forms adverbs from -ος adjectives by changing the ending to -ως, so άκρος became άκρως, literally at the highest point. Over time this spatial sense of extremity shifted to a sense of intensity, giving the modern meaning extremely or highly.
