Etymology
The word joins the prefix μετα- (change, transfer) with μόσχευση, a noun built on the verb μοσχεύω, meaning to graft a shoot onto another plant. That verb in turn comes from μόσχος, an old Greek word for a young shoot or sapling. Modern Greek extended the botanical image of grafting to the medical sense of moving an organ from one body to another.
