Etymology

Καθοδηγώ is built from the prefix κατά (down, thoroughly) and οδηγώ (to guide, to drive), which itself comes from οδός (road, way) plus ηγέομαι (to lead). The root of οδός has no settled origin, but ηγέομαι is traditionally traced to a root meaning to track down or seek out, the same one behind Latin sagire and English seek. The literal image is leading someone down a path, and the modern verb kept that sense while widening it to cover guidance of any kind, physical, professional, or moral.
