Etymology

Καθοδήγηση is a noun built from the verb καθοδηγώ, meaning to guide or direct. That verb is itself a compound of κατά (down, along, thoroughly) and οδηγώ (to lead the way), which traces back to οδός, meaning road or path, joined with the leading sense found in ἡγέομαι. The rough breathing on the old leading-root turns κατά into καθ- in the compound, the same shift seen in καθηγητής, the word for professor. The suffix -ηση then turns the verb into an abstract noun, the act or result of guiding.
