The word joins σκηνή, meaning stage, scene, or tent, with a form built on τίθημι, meaning to place or set. Together they describe someone who sets up the scene or stage, the role we now call a director. The origin of σκηνή itself is not settled among scholars, so no single root can be assigned to it with confidence. The placing element, by contrast, traces back clearly through Greek τίθημι to a well established Indo-European root for putting or placing.
