Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek όρχις, meaning testicle. Over time the sounds shifted, or and ch swapped places, giving the form αρχίδιον, a diminutive. That diminutive shrank further to the modern αρχίδι. The same ancient root όρχις also gave English the word orchid, named for a tuber shaped like a testicle.
