Etymology
In Ancient Greek, ἄλλοθι was an adverb meaning 'elsewhere', built from ἄλλος ('other') plus the old locative suffix -θι, seen also in words like οἴκοθι ('at home'). Latin borrowed the same formation as alibi, meaning 'elsewhere' or 'in another place', and that Latin word became the international legal term for proving one was somewhere else during a crime. Modern Greek then took the word back into its legal and everyday vocabulary as the noun άλλοθι, spelled exactly as the ancient adverb but now functioning as a noun for the piece of evidence itself.
