Προαγωγή comes from the verb προάγω, itself formed from the prefix προ- (forward, before) and άγω (to lead, to drive). The suffix -γή turns the verb into an abstract noun denoting the result of the action, so προαγωγή literally means a leading forward. Over time this settled into the everyday sense of promotion or advancement, as in rank or career.
