The word combines the prefix δια- (through, across) with the verb τίθημι/θέτω (to put, to place), forming διατίθημι, meaning to dispose or arrange. The adjective διαθέσιμος derives from this verb and describes something that can be put at someone's disposal. It entered wide modern use through administrative and commercial Greek in the 19th and 20th centuries.
