Etymology

Άρχοντας descends from the ancient Greek ἄρχων (archon), the present participle of ἄρχειν, meaning to rule or to be first. In Classical Athens an archon was a top magistrate. The word survived into Modern Greek as a general term for a lord or powerful man. Its ultimate root before Greek is not firmly established, so no PIE root is given here.
