Etymology

In Ancient Greek, χλόη meant a young green shoot or fresh growth, the first grass or foliage of spring. It shares its root with χλωρός, meaning pale green or fresh, and with the wider Indo-European word family for yellow-green colors. That same root gave English words such as yellow and gold, and Latin helvus, meaning honey colored. In Modern Greek, χλόη settled into a narrower sense: grass, especially a lawn.
