Ένωση is a deverbal noun built from the verb ενώνω, meaning to unite or join together. The suffix -ση is a common Greek device for turning a verb into an abstract noun of action, as in κίνηση from κινώ. Ενώνω itself descends from ancient Greek ἑνόω, formed on the word for one, εἷς and ἕν. That numeral traces back to a Proto-Indo-European word for one, which also gave rise to English same and Latin semel.
