Etymology
Αγωνία comes from ἀγών (agon), the ancient Greek word for a contest or struggle, such as an athletic or legal contest. The suffix -ία turns it into an abstract noun meaning the state of being in a contest, which shifted to mean the tension and dread felt before or during a struggle. English borrowed the word directly as agony.
