Etymology
Modern Greek εσείς is not a straight descendant of Ancient Greek ὑμεῖς. Medieval Greek instead built it from the same stem σε- found in σύ/σε, you singular, extended with the plural ending -εις by analogy, and it carried over the singular's prothetic ε-. σεις is the bare, undressed form of that pronoun, kept alive in dialects such as Cretan and Cypriot, in folk song, and in fast colloquial speech, where the opening ε- drops.
