Etymology

The word builds on βάσανος, an ancient Greek term for a touchstone used to test the purity of gold, which came to mean a trial or ordeal by extension. From it grew the verb βασανίζω, to torment or torture, and the noun βασανιστήριο, denoting the place, act, or instrument of that torment. Βάσανος is thought to be a loanword from a pre-Greek or Lydian source rather than native Indo-European vocabulary, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
