Etymology

Κήρυγμα comes from the verb κηρύσσω (to proclaim, to herald), which itself relates to κῆρυξ, the ancient Greek word for a herald or town crier. The suffix -μα turns the verb into a noun naming the result of the action, so κήρυγμα literally denotes the thing proclaimed. The origin of κῆρυξ itself is not securely traced to a known Indo-European root. English borrowed the word directly as 'kerygma', a theological term for the core proclamation of the Christian gospel.
