Etymology
Διάβολος comes from the ancient Greek verb διαβάλλω, meaning to slander or to set people against each other, literally to throw something across. In the Septuagint and New Testament, translators used διάβολος to render the Hebrew word for accuser, and the term became fixed as a name for the chief adversary of God. Latin borrowed the word as diabolus, and from there it spread into most European languages, including English devil.
