Etymology
Πειρασμός comes from the verb πειράζω, meaning to try, test, or tempt, which itself derives from the noun πεῖρα, meaning trial or attempt. The suffix -μός turns a verb into an abstract noun naming the result of the action. So πειρασμός literally names the act of being tested or tried, and by extension the pull toward wrongdoing.
