Etymology

Ακρόαση comes from the ancient Greek verb ἀκροάομαι, to listen attentively. That verb joins ἄκρος, meaning topmost or extreme, with οὖς, ear, giving a sense of catching sound at the very edge of the ear, that is, listening closely. The noun was formed with the action suffix -ση, the same pattern used for words like δράση, action. Modern Greek kept the meaning: the act of listening, whether at a concert audition, a courtroom, or a doctor's exam.
