Προαίσθημα is built from the prefix προ- ("before") and αίσθημα ("feeling"), which comes from the verb αἰσθάνομαι ("to perceive, to sense"). Together the parts mean a feeling that arrives ahead of the event it points to. The origin of the root behind αἰσθάνομαι is disputed among etymologists, and some regard it as pre-Greek rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary. For that reason no secure Indo-European root or cognate set can be given here.
