Etymology

The word comes from Ancient Greek ἀναλαμβάνω, built from the prefix ἀνά ('up', 'back') and λαμβάνω ('to take'). The base sense is 'to take up' or 'to pick up', which extended over time to cover taking on a duty, a role, or a cost, and, in medical use, to picking oneself back up after illness. The root of λαμβάνω itself has no secure Indo-European etymology; Beekes treats it as likely of Pre-Greek origin.
