It joins the prefix αντί- (against, in return, toward) with a noun built on the verb λαμβάνω (to take, seize), specifically on the stem seen in λῆψις (a taking). The compound literally points to a taking in of something, a sense that shifted to grasping mentally, hence perception or understanding. Linguists disagree on the deeper origin of λαμβάνω itself, and some treat it as a pre-Greek substrate word rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary, so no further root is given here.
