Etymology
Εικασία comes from the verb εικάζω, meaning to guess or to infer from resemblance. That verb belongs to the same old Greek word family as ἔοικα (to seem, to resemble) and εἰκών (image, likeness), the ancestor of the English word icon. The suffix -ία turns the verb into an abstract noun: the mental act of guessing based on a likeness rather than proof. Scholars are not certain the root goes back further than Greek itself, so no wider Indo-European origin is confirmed.
