Άρνηση comes from the ancient Greek verb ἀρνέομαι (arnéomai), meaning to deny or refuse, plus the suffix -ση that turns a verb into an action noun. The origin of ἀρνέομαι itself is not settled. Linguists have not traced it to a secure Indo-European root, and some think it may descend from a pre-Greek substrate word. The modern noun keeps the old sense of refusal and denial, and it also serves as the standard grammatical term for negation.
