Etymology
Εξοχικός derives from εξοχή, the Greek word for countryside. Εξοχή itself comes from εξέχω, meaning to stand out or project, built from εκ- (out) and έχω (to hold). The sense shifted from a literal projection of land to the open country beyond a city's edge. The adjectival suffix -ικός then turned the noun into a word meaning pertaining to the countryside.
