Etymology
Εξοχή comes from the verb εξέχω, built from the prefix εξ- (out of) and έχω (to hold, to have). Εξέχω meant to stand out or project, and εξοχή was the noun for that prominence. Greek speakers extended the sense to elevated or open land beyond the city walls, and from there to the countryside in general. A separate but related sense survives in the fixed phrase κατ' εξοχήν, meaning par excellence, which keeps the older idea of standing out above the rest.
