Etymology

Στέμμα comes from the ancient verb στέφω, meaning to encircle or wreathe something around an object. The noun suffix -μα, which marks the result of an action, was added to the verb stem, and the combination of the stem-final consonant with μ produced the double μμ. So a στέμμα is literally the thing that results from wreathing or crowning.
