Etymology
The word comes from the verb εμπνέω, meaning to breathe into or instill. That verb combines the prefix εν- (in) with πνέω (to breathe). The origin of πνέω itself is uncertain. Ancient Greek writers already used εμπνέω in the figurative sense of instilling courage or a divine impulse into someone, and the noun έμπνευση kept that figurative meaning into Modern Greek.
