Etymology

The word builds on μέγας, the ancient Greek word for great. From it came the adjective μεγαλείος, majestic or grand, and from that the superlative μεγαλειότατος, literally most majestic. Greek adopted this superlative as a fixed court title, the way English uses Majesty for monarchs. It entered common use once Greece had a modern royal court in the 19th century.
