Etymology
Μέγας descends from the Ancient Greek adjective for size and importance, built on the root μεγ-. It is one of the oldest words in the language, already present in Homer. Modern Greek replaced it in everyday speech with μεγάλος, but μέγας survives as a formal, almost ceremonial word attached to titles and feast days.
