Αφησές is a colloquial coinage built on the verb αφήνω, "to leave, to let," used reflexively as αφήνομαι, "to let oneself go." Αφήνω continues Ancient Greek ἀφίημι, a compound of ἀπό- ("away, off") and ἵημι ("to send, throw"). Speakers attached the informal person-naming suffix -ές, familiar from loanwords like καφές and μεζές, to this stem to name someone typified by that neglected state.
