Etymology

Ταμείο comes from the ancient ταμιεῖον, the place belonging to a ταμίας, a steward or treasurer who allotted stores and pay. That word traces to the verb τέμνω, meaning to cut or divide, since the steward's job was to portion things out. Over time ταμιεῖον narrowed to mean the room or office where money was kept, and in modern Greek it now covers everything from a shop till to a state fund.
