Etymology

Εργαζόμενος is the present participle of the verb εργάζομαι, to work. That verb is built on the noun έργο, work, plus a verbal suffix. Over time the participle came to function as an ordinary noun meaning worker or employee, much as English uses working in a working man. The underlying root goes back to a common Indo-European word for work or activity.
